Ill Manors - Tag London Campaign

I believe the ill manors tag London campaign helped to promote the film as it allowed people on Twitter to interact with the movie. As the Twitter account said if you tweet us what you think of the current climate in the UK we will respond to this and graffiti it and this kind of links in with in the movie as the movie itself shows different views to what the media show us so it is as if they are giving you a chance to spread your message and even be a part of the ill manor project.
There are links between the ill manors campaign as they are trying to get their messages across. They may be different messages but they are all trying to send out messages to their viewers. This is from the broadcast in where Plan B may have interviews with talk shows to magazine articles which is similar to the ill manors campaign as they all promoting the movie and giving you a way of interacting with things to do with ill manors.
I believe this type of a campaign may be more successful that traditional campaigns as it is using Twitter and social networking to promote themselves. In today's modern society technology is an important asset to the way we live and e media is becoming more and more important. So by ill manors using this campaign through twitter and using hash tags they would be targeting a wide target audience due to the fact that e media may be more important than broadcast and print nowadays. Also through Twitter they are able to target a much wider audience as well as the campaign itself being different and unique.

5) WHY ARE THE RICH GETTING RICHER AND THE POOR GETTING POORER. PFFT TO THE GOVERNMENT.THE OLYMPICS.WILL DESTROY LONDON #ILLMANORS
This would appeal I believe mainly to struggler's as this tweet may be related to them in the way that the poorer are getting poorer. Also to a a more D demographic which relates to what I said about psycographics.

#ILLMANORS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF CAMERON'S BROKEN BRITAIN
This would appeal to I believe to explorers as for e.g. they try new brands and individualism and this tweet highlights this, I say this as the tweet is going against Cameron and expressing their own views.

#ILLMANORS INCLUSION NOT EXCLUSION.
I believe this would appeal to struggler's as this group would relate to the tweet. Inclusion not exclusion shows that they want to be part of society and not be outsiders and this is what struggler's are seen in society who seek escape.

ON PRINCIPLE, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TEENAGER LOOTING TRAINERS AND A POLITICIAN STEALING THOUSANDS IN EXPENSES? #ILLMANORS
I believe this would appeal to explorers as they try to seek discovery and seek difference and try brands in the first try. By this I mean the tweet is comparing the trainers and teenagers to rich people and expenses which are equivalent in their terms.

LONDON IS CALLING, THE CITY IS CRUMBLING #ILLMANORS.
This would relate to mainly all the psycographic groups as all groups would be affected from main-streamers to struggler's as this tweet highlights that the whole of London is calling and the city is crumbling and that something should be done.

ill Manors Twitter

  1. How does the Ill Manors Twitter feed use the Ill Manors brand to promote the film?
  2. What hashtags are used on the Ill Manors Twitter feed?
  3. Find three celebrities the Ill Manors Twitter feed re-tweeted to promote the film and explain how they appeal to the Ill Manors target audience.
  4. How has the Ill Manors Twitter feed used pictures to help promote the film?
  5. Find examples of the Ill Manors Tag London campaign in the Ill Manors Twitter feed and explain how they help to target the right audience for the film.
  6. How was the Ill Manors Twitter feed used to specifically promote the release of the film (May/June 2012) and the release on DVD (October 2012)? Choose three tweets for each and explain how they effectively promote the film.

 ( Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6)
The last time something was posted on plan b's twitter page for ill Manors was 17/01/13. The hashtags used were #ill-manors, #megamonday, #playingwithfire, #Qawards. Revolver UK promoted the movie on their twitter by re-tweeting initial tweets, this helps people familiarize themselves with what is going on and who the movie is being produced by, this helps audiences identify that even though it is a low budget film, it is still being produced by us. Chris from Ill Manors, also re-tweeted the tweet of the movie's release dates this will attract his followers to be interested in the movie and will allow them to look it up and follow plan b's twitter page.
  • The background is completely comprised of a massive ill manors movie promotional poster which has rating and quotes incorporated in it. This is 'in your face' promotion of the film as the viewer will be directly presented with the poster which may alter their decision to go watch the movie.
  • The ill manors ident/ logo is used to help represent/ highlight brand identity which in turn coupled with the other pictures on the twitter feed helps to promote it.
  • dvd release : retweet of fan picture of the dvd allows viewer to acknowledge the fact it is available and that it may be popular as people have already began buying it , however they do not know whether people have 'flocked' to buy it.

ill Manors Instagram

  1. How has Ill Manors used the Instagram platform to promote Ill Manors?
On Plan B's instagram page, there are images promoting the film, the images are posters of the film with release dates and ratings. There are also posters advertising that you can now buy it on Blue Ray.

2. Choose three particular images/posts and explain why they are effective in promoting the film.

One image that is really effective is the poster with different comments from newspapers and magazines, this image is really effective in promoting the film, firstly because Riz Ahmed the main character is on the poster itself and secondly it has received many positive comments which are outlined on the poster on each side of Riz Ahmed.
Another image is of the director sitting on the wall and it says ill Manors, this image is promoting the music video, and the album as the poster is originally created from a music video shot. Lastly there is an image of all the cast and crew with the ill Manors poster, there are two quotes on each side reading 'brilliant, brutal, powerful' and on the other side 'Raw thrilling and utterly gripping' these show a quote from mens health magazine and d magazine. This is an effective way to promote something as it shows audiences views from magazines and how well the movie is doing from the opinions of those who have already watched it.

3.What hashtags are used on Instagram to promote the film? Is there consistency in branding/hashtags across social media? Why is this important?

There are no hashtags used, below any of the pictures there are no hashtags, therefore there is no consistency in branding the movie.

4. Find three images on Instagram tagged with Ill Manors that relate to other texts you have studied across the three platforms (such as the music video, TEDx lecture or a print interview). Explain the synergy between the texts.

There are 3 images which are posters of the the movie, they show posters of Plan B's movie ill Manors, they relate to other texts we have studied in class which are the Tedx lecture and the print interview. There is an image of him when he is in an interview with Fearne Cotton on the Radio One show.

ill Manors - Facebook

1. How many 'likes' has the Ill Manors film page had?
The Ill Manors Facebook page has 30K likes.

2. What is the top of the page promoting?
At the top of the Ill Manors facebook page, it has the cover of the movie, it is promoting that you can now buy on DVD and own it on Blue-ray. It is still selling the movie despite it being released quiet a while ago.

3. Choose five of the posts on the page's wall, screen grab them and explain how they appeal to the Ill Manor's target audience.

This image appeals to the target audience of Ill Manors as it shows them the ratings and comments the movie has received, it gives the audiences a second hand opinion on the movie, and for those who haven't watched it can look at this feedback which is positive and may be inspired to watch the movie.

This image is of Plan B himself, this image is showing the success of his music video, this music video appeals to a different target audience compared to the movie itself. The music video relates to a C2, D, and E target audience using psycho-graphics, this is because the music video involves violence and street language referring to those who were involved in the riots.

This screen-shot is of ill Manors being introduced in the Brit Awards, the Brit Awards usually acknowledge well-known big budget movies and the people that attend the Brit Awards are big Hollywood starts and famous people. This screen-shot shows that the audience at the Brit Awards will be different compared to the audience who listen to his music.

This image is an award for the film ill Manors, this is showing that the movie deserves to be acknowledged, this screen shot shows that the movie was watched my loads of different age groups, for it to receive an award.

This image of the director himself, this is a different side to Plan B as he is usually seen in casual clothing, this image of plan b is when he is attending an awards function for his movie which is nominated. This side of plan b compared to when he's singing his music attracts different audiences.

5. Find three examples on the Facebook wall of opportunities for user generated content or audience interaction (e.g. a question that invites people to comment or a competition to enter).

There is a competition, on plan b's Facebook page, the competition includes going to the website and entering and winning prizes that include Carling drinks and other great prizes. There are further links, linking to audiences being able to watch interviews they've missed and to leave comments and feedback. This gives people an opportunity to know the artist and director further. Below is another thing audiences can get involved in, it allows them to see whether their tweets have been projected across the UK. This is an example of audience interaction.

(London has seen your tweets! We projected across the UK's capital all of Tuesday night and this is what the people saw. Comment below if you can see any of your own tweets!

Watch now: http://youtu.be/DsksKsoAblc
Find out more: http://illmanors.time4planb.co.uk/ )

6. Find three examples of the Facebook page cross-promoting the soundtrack or DVD release.
The first example of the Facebook promoting the DVD is right at the top of the page where it says you can now buy the DVD, which also comes in Blue Ray.
An example of Facebook promoting the music video is advertising that you can now buy it on iTunes.
Lastly, there is another example promoting the music video on his Facebook page, which is the actual music video itself posted on the page.

7. How did the institution use the Facebook page to promote the film's release in May/June 2012?

The movie was promoted in various ways through Facebook. There was competitions going on, plan b's interviews, talk shows and magazine interviews were all posted on the Facebook page. This gave audiences a chance to further their knowledge about the movie and plan b himself. The Facebook page has posters of the movie itself, these posters show ratings and reviews from newspapers and magazines, there are also links to interviews and behind the scene footage with the cast and crew.

Youtube PlanBuk Channel

  1. How was the planbuk YouTube channel used to promote the Ill Manors film?
  2. Find examples of synergy or cross-promotion between the planbuk YouTube channel and other media texts you have studied as part of the case study. Explain how they both promote the film and appeal to the Ill Manors target audience.
  3. What links to other social networking sites can you find on the planbuk channel homepage?

1. On top of the planbuk you-tube channel, the ILL Manors poster is used to promote the movie. It has ratings from five newspapers, the Guardian, the Evening Standard, the Daily Telegraph, the Independent and the Metro. It also has ratings from two magazines which are The Fly and Time Out. In big bold letters it also says 'ILL Manors the number one album' this means that they are advertising success of the album. This will attract audiences to watch the movie and listen to the music related to it. The ratings will show audiences how good the film is as it is a second hand opinion on really popular newspapers and magazines.

2. On his you-tube channel it advertises the featured channel which shows other similar artists, it also shows his other music videos and related channels on you-tube. Comparing this to his poster, the ILL Manors poster includes the release date of the movie, it has quotes from newspapers. The you-tube page is promoting the music video whereas the poster is promoting the movie.

3. There are links to the twitter and Instagram and Facebook page through planbuk's you-tube channel. This then promotes the other pages planB has and people can access that which will lead to more people being interested in what he does and his movie and music video.

Improvement Paragraph

Through the website, audiences get an insight of the main characters, we hear about the making of ill manors from them. The website has many features such as important information like the release date and trailer. Comparing that to the Facebook page for ill manors it is a bit more simplistic with less information, less colour and entertainment. Both broadcast platforms are portraying the same message which goes along the lines of 'the working class are not noticed. The values expressed in the talk show would be more moralised, whereas the music video is more explicit involving violence.

Learner Response - Seatbelt Advert (GRADE B+)

WWW: Good attempt to apply theory to the text
EBI: Be more specific when discussing media forms/mise-en-scene. Add a paragraph to  Q2 conveying costume/gesture etc.

Q2: The costumes worn by the characters in the video are natural, the father and mother are dressed casually whereas the daughter is dressed in a pink dress wearing wings, this shows that she is angelic and the one who is protecting the family. The gesture portrayed on the characters faces are happy and positive. The expressions on their faces are of happy family expressions. The daughter is seen smiling when the video starts which shows a tight-knit bond between the family. The is a safe home setting, no blood and violence scene is shown to portray how to be safe, this shows a positive side to the advert as even though it is an advert consisting of danger its still shown in a positive and encouraging way.

Plan B Interviews

http://www.menshealth.co.uk/living/men/plan-b-interview
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/jun/07/plan-b-love-directing-art-lives
http://news.qthemusic.com/2012/10/plan_b_ill_manors_was_a_risk_i.html
http://www.shortlist.com/entertainment/music/plan-b-my-songs-are-all-about-real-life

Why is this platform being used?

The platform being used is Print media, the reason why this platform is being used is because it is convenient people that travel by tube or bus on the way to work can easily pick it and read it. Men's health magazine isn't expensive to busy and can be bought from various places such as the local newsagents, WHS and a store located near the bus stop or train station. For each of these interviews the same time of platform is being used which is print adverts. Newspapers are usually cheaper/free than magazines when consuming.

Does the articles do more than entertain? How?

Yes, this article informs people as well as entertain. During the article Plan B talks about how he lost weight and due to what reasons. Plan B talks about motivation and change which gave him the confidence to become someone else. As well as inform, this article educates as well, there are a lot of over-weight people in the country and Plan B talks about his regime on loosing weight which could educate those who aren't aware of how to loose body fat. During the end of the interview Plan B talks about passing his lovely suits down to a fat friend which gives the audience a chance for a little laugh which comes under entertaining your audience. In the short-list interview the article doesn't do any more than just inform because me reading the print advert as an audience I didn't feel entertained. The guardian interview was slightly longer for a different audience compared to the men's health magazine the audience for this newspaper is B, C1 and C2 audiences. This interview was more detailed and informing about the film rather than the other interviews, this one included a picture and the character Riz Ahmed.

Does the platform allow the audience to participate/contribute?

No, the platform does not allow the audiences to contribute in any way. This is due to the magazine not having any sort of quiz or competition for the audiences to get involved in. Due to it being a Print media magazine it also does not give the audiences a chance to leave their comments. The newspaper interviews did have any sort of contribution for the audiences to get involved in.

What codes and conventions of print interviews are apparent in the interview?
The codes and conventions used in the print interviews are quotes and realism, the shortlist advert and the men's health interview use quotes from Plan B himself. In the Guardian interview which was the longest interview, images of Riz Ahmed was used.

Is narrative is used to tell a story?
In the men's health interview obviously as it is a magazine to do with men the narrative is used to sort of persuade men to become like Plan B and getting into shape especially as he is a famous person and could sort of be a role model to the readers of the magazine. With Plan B saying it was easy for him this may be used to persuade the readers of the magazine. In the Q interview to help the story he talks about his albums and music and sort of talks in slang which readers of Q may relate to and may understand his message as he is not speaking in a serious tone. In the shortlist interview it has more of a like chilled atmosphere to it as some of the questions aren't the most of serious questions and this narrative may helped tell the story as it like an interview with one of his friends. In the Plan B interview with the Guardian the narrative is used to tell a story in which he talks about his life and growing up and how hard it was for him which is sort of like a story itself. Relating this to the theory of Vladmir Propp Plan B is sort of like a hero and the princess at the same time as when he was younger he needed saving from the hard life that he lived and then became a hero as he saved himself from the hard life and became someone famous, also the villains would be the people that didn't treat him as equals when he was younger and before he became famous. Also relating it to another theory most of his life was disequilibrium up until he started making music and was his equilibrium in which he then became famous.

TEDx Lecture - Plan B

TEDx Lecture - Plan B.

I think Plan B's beliefs are to not judge a book by its cover. He also says to think about what a person might have gone through or been brought up through to be the person they are today. He also believes that society and politics have demonized the youth today as the media just want us to know what they choose, and sometimes not the real side to the story. A prime example of this is when Plan B talks about a story from when he was filming ill Manors. The story was about how a group of drug-dealers were about to beat up Ben Drew and how Drew stood his ground which in turn let another group of drug dealers to come to the aid of Drew. From what Drew tells, the media left out the best, and good, part about standing his ground and just focused of the group of drug-dealers about to "kick [his] head in"

I think the target audience of the lecture is people of the socio-demographic of E, D, C1,C2. This is because Plan B talks mainly about children with backgrounds similar to his. However, I think that mainly the middle class are present at this lecture as The Guardian newspaper organises these lectures and the main readers of this newspaper is the middle class. This group would come under the psycographic of aspirer's as they aspire to know more about situations that are foreign to their own. This is different to the psycographic of Drew's films.

Drew says that the media twist the truth to meet their own gain. He also said that they only tell parts of the whole story as I explained in the above paragraph. This links back to Cohen's theory of 'Folk Devils' and how the media is demonizing the youth into a 'Folk Devil' and how the media is stereotyping he youth into being a pain and a disturbance.

Plan B - Radio Interview

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00pvgb9

Lesson Notes :
  • Educate , inform , entertain
  • Creative process
  • BBC - Public service broadcaster
  • Single/soundtrack/Album  = Synergy
  • Plan b is promoted
  • Niche - section of an audience
  • Radio playlists = target specific audience
  • Interactivity = call in , text in etc

Plan B first talks about how he is in the making of Ill manors and still doing the finishing touches to the movie by doing little parts within the movie. He also talks about how he is lacking sleep as he is also trying to complete his album which links to the movie called ill manors. His latest single which he also talks about is called ill manors and Fearne then gives a little snippet of the song and then says the song is going to be played everyday of that week so that Plan B is being promoted as well as his movie and his album. This is the difference between radio stations and TV programmes for example as Radio stations are always being played and could benefit the artist more however it is being played to a smaller audience than say someone at Jonathan Ross.

Letter to Plan B

Dear Ben Drew,
I am writing to you regarding your amazing film ILL Manors, we have been studying your film and music video for our media exam. Whilst studying ILL Manors and listening to your interviews I have been really inspired. I have never really thought about the people with less opportunities to I have, and it’s been a real eye-opener. Whilst watching your TEDx interview it has really inspired me to help someone who has a talent and bring them to the real world the world they haven’t come across. I am writing this letter kindly asking you to attend my school Greenford High School in West London. We are a hard-working school and we would love you to visit our school and help enhance our grades and help us develop as young individuals.

I would also like to congratulate you on your success in ILL Manors, it is an amazing film, it’s not the sort of films I watch but I found it really interesting and different from the usual big budget movies we come across these days.

Kind Regards,

Humera Zaffar Syed.

Title of Publication
The title of the magazine is Doctor Who which is also named after the drama series as well. The colour of the title is in a grey cloudy colour which is also the background colour. The head of Matt Smith (the doctor) covers the title slightly this shows that he is important and well known. It is placed on the top third so that it is easily visible. The cover image is familiar to the audiences therefore the title stands out.

Slogan
The slogan is in big and white writing, it's catchy and it is meant to stick in the readers mind. It sums up the magazines image as it covers the medium main picture.

Central Image
Most magazines tend to employ a single image whereas this magazine has one centre image and 2 people around him. The look on Matt Smith's face is serious and straight. The centre image which is of the doctor is a strong central image which servers to anchor the cover which provides it with weight and focus. Matt Smith is gazing into the camera so are the other 2 people on the magazine cover. This shows the audience that the people on the magazine are directly addressing them.

Free offer
Magazines sometimes come with free small gifts. In this Doctor Who magazine, there is a competition which reads 'competition win free gifts such as DVD's and Blue Ray DVD's' this is to persuade the audience more into buying the magazine as they are getting something free out of it which audiences like. This gift is closely targeted at the magazines core consumers.

Cover Lines
Once the main image or images are placed on the background, the cover lines will be strategically placed around it so as to advertise the contents of the magazine. In this magazine all the cover lines are placed in the middle rather than most magazines which place their cover lines around the picture. The main cover line is always and most likely in bold and large writing, this usually connects with the central image.

Ill Manors Chat Show Soccer Am With Ben Drew.

Plan B was on the Soccer Am show on Jan 19th 2010. This was before he realised his movie and music video ill Manors. On this chat show he talks about being different from everyone else and not promoting girls and alcohol in his music videos like other rappers. On the chat show Plan B talks about how he has just realised a music video with his original voice rather than rapping he's produced a solo single. He talks about him learning to play the guitar from an early age. Plan B says he wants to experiment on everything that's why his next single would of been a reggae song.

This chat show was before Plan B made his movie therefore he does not speak about in the chat show, he does empathises his unique believes and values. The audience watching this show using the socio demo-graphics are C1, C2 and D, these are those with decent incomes and those who have spare time to waste. We could argue that the groups B would watch this show as it has to do with football.

Ill Manors Website/Chat Show Analysis

Plan B was on the Jonathan Ross show which was aired on ITV, this show has been attended by big celebrities such as Cheryl Cole, Rosie Huntington, and Mo Farah which was there with him. Plan B attended this show not to promote his movie or music video Ill Manors but was here to promote himself as an artist. Plan B talks about his rapping being poetry rather than it consisting of lots of naked girls and alcohol which is typical these days. Plan B is different to other rappers as he is unique and special in what he does. On the chat show he doesn't dress up in fancy clothes or empathises his 'fame'.

The audience for this show using the demo-graphics are C1, C2, B, these are usually the successful and wealthy people. ITV has strong ethical brand values and it is a family channel. Despite Plan B being from the estate 'chav' background he was still considered as being unique and was invited to the show. Plan B or the interviewer doesn't mention his movie or his music video during his chat with Jonathan but discusses himself as an artist

http://www.illmanors.com/#scene-0
The key features on the website are trailers, synopsis, Ben Drew, Stills, Videos etc. These are included to enhance the movie, these features give the audience a chance to get to know more about the film if they haven't seen it already. It promotes the behind the scenes videos so the audience can feel closer to the cast and feel important as they are being shown the behind the scenes.

On the website there is also a 'Reactions' tab, this shows feedback from various celebrities such as Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Alesha Dixon and so on. There is also feedback from newspapers The Observer which is an Independent newspaper for mainstreams and politicians, this shows the audience how popular the movie is even to non-teenagers and people from C1 D psycho-graphics.

This information is useful for the audiences because it concentrates just on the film itself, this shows to the audience how valued the film is to the director. On the website there is a lot of useful information for the audiences to see and research on.

Ill Manors Film Research ..

1         1.  Film London microwave, BBC films which has been existed for 13 years and mostly produces and co produces British films. Another institution that was a part of the film was Aim image which provide the kit for the film.
2.
2. The films budgets£100,000 which is not a lot for a film but ill manors used their money carefully and they got brilliant results.

3. The films funding came from in a development 3 year plan. The money was funded by film London micro scheme in 2009.

4. Their target audience ranges from young kids who are portrayed in the film and those who are looking for an alternative perspective on the stereotypes featured in the film.

5. Revolver Entertainment

6.Well lots of young people was interested in because Plan B directed so therefore it was very easy to spared because young people spared things they like every easily. Also there was a lot of buzz on YouTube especially SBTV (YouTube Channel based around new young talents like rappers) which showed behind the scenes of the film a lot.

7. This varies from a blockbuster in the actors it incorporates and also the advertising styles it uses. However it is similar to a blockbuster due to its stunts and nifty camerawork which help mask the fact it has a downgraded budget compared to a blockbuster film.

8. The trailer balances the plot as it itself has a equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium which give the trailer more depth and helps balance it.

Plan B - ill Manors official video

Media Representation:
Within the video the masculinity of men is shown they shown as dominate men and this relates to the theory of Berger which goes as such 'Men act women appear'. The stereotype by Medhurt where men are stereotypically more controlling and dominant. The 'youth' are featured in this video as this is aimed at their lifestyles, the story Plan B is trying to tell is that council estate kids aren't as bad as they are portrayed. In the scenes of violence and looting we see mostly young men carrying out these acts as typically boys are more misbehaved then girls. The age range is 16-35 year old's, we see all ages from this age band. The ethnic groups represented the most in this video are White British and Black African, these ethnicities are those who typically live in estate houses and are those who caused the riots.

Media Institution:
The video of Plan B's ill manors is very diverse, low key lighting has been used and you can see in the video there isn't lots of 'girls and alcohol' which is typically seen in rap video. This shows his unique and creative side to hip-hip which he refers to 'poetry'. Even though plan B wants to show a different side to estate kids he still shows them creating havoc and disturbing people. Plan B believes that the media washes people to believe something and then they start believing that and judging peoples ability, this is also a line in his music video. Another message Plan B gives in his music video is that schools out and communities are closed and they have nothing to do that's why they are rioting which makes sense they're young and bored and they are being labelled therefore they think it is right to do what they are doing. In this video Plan B shows his truth and how he grew up and got kicked out of school, he's trying to say that the media glamorise things that shouldn't be such as gadgets and latest phones rather than helping those who need help.

Media Audience:
I believe this music video can relate to everyone not only teenagers. This video can relate to those celebrities who have been brought up in council estate houses and have come so far to reflect on these situations that are still on-going. The video consists of youth actors in the video but the messages portrayed in the music video are fit enough for adults that are mature to understand. I think the music video is based on the social demographics E, D, C2, C1 the reason for this is because the B and A category are too strict and have a tunnel vision on the youth. Based on the lifestyle classification by Young and Rubicam the groups are struggler's and reformers this is because struggler's are like estate youths they're struggling to become something whereas reformers want to make a change due to where they come from.
The cover line 'I can't trust anyone' would appeal to our film because in there something similar happens, the double personality of the serial killer can relate to his girlfriends feelings of him being unfaithful and not trust worthy. This cover line is really catchy and if we had an exclusive interview with Rob Pattison and his ex-girlfriends cheating scandal would be good for our magazine cover.

The cover line 'Yes they're in love' is another very catchy cover line, this would appeal to the E4 target audience, there's a twilight exclusive which appeals to the E4 audience aswell. Similarly to our production the couple are in love.

This seventeen magazine covers the E4 target audience (15-35). On this magazine there is a very catchy cover line 'Total dating confidence, flirty lines guys can't resist'. This cover line fits perfectly for the age range 15-35 E4 audience.

This magazine has a cover line in black 'Beef up your skills' as my magazine cover will consist of a male's image this cover line would work really well with it. 15-35 year old's are fit and young therefore will be interested in these sort of things.

This is also another Men's health magazine which has an interesting cover line for men 'Build 6kg of hard muscle' this cover line would also be appealing to most young males as growing your muscles is something most men are keen on. This would look good on my magazine cover because my magazine cover has a male's photo on it.

Ill Manors : The making of ..

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
The intentions we learn about the director are quiet clear, to the audience it is revealed that his intentions are related to personal experience. The director is narrating a story, and this story is his own. We learn from the director that he has been through this and it's not a choice, he also tells us that the people who go through this struggle may not like to do it but have no choice its not just black and white. We also learn how passionate he is about making this movie despite his low budget and not-known characters. The director puts through a challenge to himself and the audience watching that these people need help and should not be neglected just because of the way they are.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
We learn that before he made this movie he made a short rap with little scenes in it, from this he gets inspired to make something bigger but still with a low budget in his pocket. The production is not professional and it is more realistic so that people watching can relate them to this movie and make a change or walk away from this life just Ben Drew did himself and how we see Aaron ( Riz Ahmed ) walk away. We learn that characters were not big Hollywood stars and the director doesn't know much about media or media terms but sticks to what he wants to do and will achieve it.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
The audience for this movie are possibly the youth, those who are growing up in estates and feel like they have less opportunities. It is also believed that people that rioted are the audience as they were angry and frustrated because of being labelled as 'bad youth and working class people'. I think from the psycho-graphic group Reformers are also amongst those who this movie is aimed at because they are those who want to make a change for themselves and for the society. In the making we hear Ben Drew saying those who did not riot are those who this may be aimed at to show them that these people don't do what they do for the fun of it.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve?
This film does successfully do what the director set out to achieve, the movie made £453,000 which is more than what they spent on the movie. This amount shows that it did get views and people were interested in watching this low budget movie. During the end of the movie we see a positive outcome when Aaron decides to walk away from the struggle life which is an achievement to him and a positive message to those who are going through this, by that scene he is giving hope to millions out there and proving a point to them. The film was a success and he did achieve his goal due to the fact he isn't a professional director and isn't very professional himself.

Ill Manors Review.

Ill Manors Review.

Ill Manors is directed by Ben Drew who is known by the name of Plan B. It is believed to be his second film he has directed but the first to receive success. This movie was a low budget film.
The cast and crew in the film are Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Ben Drew (the director himself), Nick Sagar and many others. The characters in the movie are not big Hollywood stars but have come in movies before, if the movie was being watched my Main-streamers it would be hard for them to recognise these characters. Big stars were not used in the movie to make it look realistic and more urban. Riz Ahmed who played the role as Aaron has been in another successful movie Three Lions and also Trishna.
The storyline consists of drug and alcohol use, misuse of women and violence. There are 4 characters who consume a lot of drugs and when it becomes to hard to gain drugs they turn to prostitutes to make money for them as women in that field are very vulnerable. It shows how prostitutes struggle with controlling men and have to deal with the consequences later in life. It is revealed that most of these drug users and prostitutes are from broken family backgrounds and have been bought up in care homes where they did not get proper teachings of what is socially expectable and what is not. Nick Sagar is a young adult who we see hangs around in gangs and gets young teenagers involved in gang crime and violence to make him a part of him.
The mood of the film is depressing and very uncomfortable for the people watching, it makes the audience feel disturbed. This is because of the disturbing things that take place in the film such as gun crime and young teenagers being forced to be involved in bullying. There's always tension in the film and there is no happy situations. The genre of the film is Urban Crime Drama.
The audience of the film is 18-27 year old, I have based this on the characters ages that act in the film. These ages are those who are involved in misuse of drugs, crime and violence. The use of bad language and sex also covers this age range. This film is to educate those involved in such things on how bad the after affects are and how it can ruin your life.
The music used throughout is by the director himself Plan B, the music is mainly rap and tells the stories of the characters through his voice-over. The genre of music that was used was grime music which is a sub-culture of hip-hop.

How has Ill Manors used the broadcast platform to generate interest in the film?

Q1: What are the typical codes and conventions of the film trailers? - what information is provided?
In the trailer the director shows all the characters in a quick glance, the most                                 interesting shots are shown but not enough is reviled for the audience to identify                            what exactly is going on. Other elements involved in the trailer is the plot summary, voice over, titles of the movie and the cast/credit information.

Q2: How are the trailers distributed?
From all the information I gathered trailers are usually distributed via the same studio productions so for example Warner brothers or Harry Potter films. Other ways how trailers were distributed were through social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter. Other websites were also used to distribute trailers.

Q3: How does Ill manors use trailer conventions?
The voice-over in the trailer tells a story, the music used in the background is parallel it flows with what is happening. There is a plot summary and most of the main characters are introduced and suspense builds up. During the end of the trailer second hand opinions are shown such as the different quotes from newspapers. Second hand opinions give the audience a view on whether to watch the movie or not.

Q4: Who are the target audience?
The target audience for this film are 16-27 year old. The main target audience are teenagers, this is because of the characters acting in the film, they are young adults and we also see a few young teenagers. The main stars such as Riz Ahmed and Ed Skrein are visible in the trailer. It is filmed in London, the typical area where you will find these crimes such as consuming drugs and violence, I think this is the USP for the movie as many people will be able to relate to it. Coming towards the end the release date is shown 'June 6th' which is convenient for the audience. The director which is Plan B is also reviled in the trailer when we see the cabdriver in the view mirror.

Q5: How has the genres in the film been represented through characters, setting, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements and angles?
The colours used in the trailer are usually dull and dark which portrays the bad life the characters live. It has been shot in the rural parts of London rather than the city. The music used gives it an edgy feeling to the audience a kind of awkward and disturbing feeling, we also hear the directors voice. The shots used are quick shots through the trailer but we see close-ups and slow shots when something important is being emphasised.

Learner Responce - Grade D.

WWW: Clearly written, with some use of media terminology.
EBI: Try to include theory in each question - narrative in Q.2.

Narrative:
The voice-over gives us characteristics and links with editing to introduce the crew, music used underwater suggests (bath - enigma codes and action codes). Digetic and non-digetic sounds are used in the video. Super-slow music used to complete the narrative. When the famous 'belly flop' of the penguin was captured, we see this in a close-up shot, a close-up shot is used to emphasise the importance of that particular shot. A close-up gives the audience a better picture of what is being shown.

Particularly loud digetic sound is used as penguins loading in camera-work makes audience feel a part of the scene. Using high definition will impress the audience as there is nothing better than having a very clear image of what you are watching. The sound and editing put together gives the audience a better image of the narrative. The popular 'belly flop' shot of the penguin is so clear and imaginary it feels like as if your watching it live. This shot will encourage positive word of mouth and will pull in a lot more audience.

The editing underwater and above water section is separated to help narrative. Underwater edition makes the scene look more magical and fairytale like whereas the above water editing makes the scene look realistic and full of effort. The editing above water seems much more difficult as we see the cameramen struggling, whereas the underwater editing seems like it did not need much effort. The camera-work used protray's the sequence in huge detail because of such clean shots, the camera doesn't go out of focus or anything at any time during the video.

Mise-en-scene - Setting, props, photos, costumes, make-up.

Setting
We will be filming at the heart of London, the city center. We have chosen this area due to giving it a more sophisticated look a more business killer look. Filming it in London will also make it more realistic and it will go with the typical 'city' crime.

Our filming will be in the morning time and at night times. Night scenes will also be shot in London, at the lighting will come from the buildings around London, such as offices and also from the bridge and the London Eye.

We will be filming in January/February when it will be getting dark quicker and it will be rainy and cold, this weather will go perfectly with the serial killer film whereas summer scenes in London do not quiet go with this genre. Grey and black clouds will also fit perfectly with our genre.

Make-up
The make-up our female characters will be using will be Mac make-up. Mac makeup is usually used by professionals and actresses. On professional cameras Mac make-up looks smooth and very natural.

The products the female characters will be using is Pro-Long wear foundation, Ruby Woo Matte lipstick, Natural Bronze and Red lip liner. By using this make-up the female characters will get a professional look.

Costumes.

The serial killer, which is Vinesh will be wearing a black and white suit, black coat and black trousers, white smart shirt and a black tie. A black tie will be worn instead of a brighter colour because serial killers are mainly associated with darker colours rather than brighter colours, darker colours also connote mysterious behaviour.

The serial killers costume will stay the same throughout, he will not be seen wearing anything else. By staying consistent the serial killer's look will look more realistic. We have chosen this get-up because of the setting, because we have chosen to set it in London, this costume works out best.
