Ill Manors : The making of ..

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
The intentions we learn about the director are quiet clear, to the audience it is revealed that his intentions are related to personal experience. The director is narrating a story, and this story is his own. We learn from the director that he has been through this and it's not a choice, he also tells us that the people who go through this struggle may not like to do it but have no choice its not just black and white. We also learn how passionate he is about making this movie despite his low budget and not-known characters. The director puts through a challenge to himself and the audience watching that these people need help and should not be neglected just because of the way they are.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
We learn that before he made this movie he made a short rap with little scenes in it, from this he gets inspired to make something bigger but still with a low budget in his pocket. The production is not professional and it is more realistic so that people watching can relate them to this movie and make a change or walk away from this life just Ben Drew did himself and how we see Aaron ( Riz Ahmed ) walk away. We learn that characters were not big Hollywood stars and the director doesn't know much about media or media terms but sticks to what he wants to do and will achieve it.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
The audience for this movie are possibly the youth, those who are growing up in estates and feel like they have less opportunities. It is also believed that people that rioted are the audience as they were angry and frustrated because of being labelled as 'bad youth and working class people'. I think from the psycho-graphic group Reformers are also amongst those who this movie is aimed at because they are those who want to make a change for themselves and for the society. In the making we hear Ben Drew saying those who did not riot are those who this may be aimed at to show them that these people don't do what they do for the fun of it.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve?
This film does successfully do what the director set out to achieve, the movie made £453,000 which is more than what they spent on the movie. This amount shows that it did get views and people were interested in watching this low budget movie. During the end of the movie we see a positive outcome when Aaron decides to walk away from the struggle life which is an achievement to him and a positive message to those who are going through this, by that scene he is giving hope to millions out there and proving a point to them. The film was a success and he did achieve his goal due to the fact he isn't a professional director and isn't very professional himself.

Ill Manors Review.

Ill Manors Review.

Ill Manors is directed by Ben Drew who is known by the name of Plan B. It is believed to be his second film he has directed but the first to receive success. This movie was a low budget film.
The cast and crew in the film are Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Ben Drew (the director himself), Nick Sagar and many others. The characters in the movie are not big Hollywood stars but have come in movies before, if the movie was being watched my Main-streamers it would be hard for them to recognise these characters. Big stars were not used in the movie to make it look realistic and more urban. Riz Ahmed who played the role as Aaron has been in another successful movie Three Lions and also Trishna.
The storyline consists of drug and alcohol use, misuse of women and violence. There are 4 characters who consume a lot of drugs and when it becomes to hard to gain drugs they turn to prostitutes to make money for them as women in that field are very vulnerable. It shows how prostitutes struggle with controlling men and have to deal with the consequences later in life. It is revealed that most of these drug users and prostitutes are from broken family backgrounds and have been bought up in care homes where they did not get proper teachings of what is socially expectable and what is not. Nick Sagar is a young adult who we see hangs around in gangs and gets young teenagers involved in gang crime and violence to make him a part of him.
The mood of the film is depressing and very uncomfortable for the people watching, it makes the audience feel disturbed. This is because of the disturbing things that take place in the film such as gun crime and young teenagers being forced to be involved in bullying. There's always tension in the film and there is no happy situations. The genre of the film is Urban Crime Drama.
The audience of the film is 18-27 year old, I have based this on the characters ages that act in the film. These ages are those who are involved in misuse of drugs, crime and violence. The use of bad language and sex also covers this age range. This film is to educate those involved in such things on how bad the after affects are and how it can ruin your life.
The music used throughout is by the director himself Plan B, the music is mainly rap and tells the stories of the characters through his voice-over. The genre of music that was used was grime music which is a sub-culture of hip-hop.

How has Ill Manors used the broadcast platform to generate interest in the film?

Q1: What are the typical codes and conventions of the film trailers? - what information is provided?
In the trailer the director shows all the characters in a quick glance, the most                                 interesting shots are shown but not enough is reviled for the audience to identify                            what exactly is going on. Other elements involved in the trailer is the plot summary, voice over, titles of the movie and the cast/credit information.

Q2: How are the trailers distributed?
From all the information I gathered trailers are usually distributed via the same studio productions so for example Warner brothers or Harry Potter films. Other ways how trailers were distributed were through social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter. Other websites were also used to distribute trailers.

Q3: How does Ill manors use trailer conventions?
The voice-over in the trailer tells a story, the music used in the background is parallel it flows with what is happening. There is a plot summary and most of the main characters are introduced and suspense builds up. During the end of the trailer second hand opinions are shown such as the different quotes from newspapers. Second hand opinions give the audience a view on whether to watch the movie or not.

Q4: Who are the target audience?
The target audience for this film are 16-27 year old. The main target audience are teenagers, this is because of the characters acting in the film, they are young adults and we also see a few young teenagers. The main stars such as Riz Ahmed and Ed Skrein are visible in the trailer. It is filmed in London, the typical area where you will find these crimes such as consuming drugs and violence, I think this is the USP for the movie as many people will be able to relate to it. Coming towards the end the release date is shown 'June 6th' which is convenient for the audience. The director which is Plan B is also reviled in the trailer when we see the cabdriver in the view mirror.

Q5: How has the genres in the film been represented through characters, setting, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements and angles?
The colours used in the trailer are usually dull and dark which portrays the bad life the characters live. It has been shot in the rural parts of London rather than the city. The music used gives it an edgy feeling to the audience a kind of awkward and disturbing feeling, we also hear the directors voice. The shots used are quick shots through the trailer but we see close-ups and slow shots when something important is being emphasised.

Learner Responce - Grade D.

WWW: Clearly written, with some use of media terminology.
EBI: Try to include theory in each question - narrative in Q.2.

Narrative:
The voice-over gives us characteristics and links with editing to introduce the crew, music used underwater suggests (bath - enigma codes and action codes). Digetic and non-digetic sounds are used in the video. Super-slow music used to complete the narrative. When the famous 'belly flop' of the penguin was captured, we see this in a close-up shot, a close-up shot is used to emphasise the importance of that particular shot. A close-up gives the audience a better picture of what is being shown.

Particularly loud digetic sound is used as penguins loading in camera-work makes audience feel a part of the scene. Using high definition will impress the audience as there is nothing better than having a very clear image of what you are watching. The sound and editing put together gives the audience a better image of the narrative. The popular 'belly flop' shot of the penguin is so clear and imaginary it feels like as if your watching it live. This shot will encourage positive word of mouth and will pull in a lot more audience.

The editing underwater and above water section is separated to help narrative. Underwater edition makes the scene look more magical and fairytale like whereas the above water editing makes the scene look realistic and full of effort. The editing above water seems much more difficult as we see the cameramen struggling, whereas the underwater editing seems like it did not need much effort. The camera-work used protray's the sequence in huge detail because of such clean shots, the camera doesn't go out of focus or anything at any time during the video.

Mise-en-scene - Setting, props, photos, costumes, make-up.

Setting
We will be filming at the heart of London, the city center. We have chosen this area due to giving it a more sophisticated look a more business killer look. Filming it in London will also make it more realistic and it will go with the typical 'city' crime.

Our filming will be in the morning time and at night times. Night scenes will also be shot in London, at the lighting will come from the buildings around London, such as offices and also from the bridge and the London Eye.

We will be filming in January/February when it will be getting dark quicker and it will be rainy and cold, this weather will go perfectly with the serial killer film whereas summer scenes in London do not quiet go with this genre. Grey and black clouds will also fit perfectly with our genre.

Make-up
The make-up our female characters will be using will be Mac make-up. Mac makeup is usually used by professionals and actresses. On professional cameras Mac make-up looks smooth and very natural.

The products the female characters will be using is Pro-Long wear foundation, Ruby Woo Matte lipstick, Natural Bronze and Red lip liner. By using this make-up the female characters will get a professional look.

Costumes.

The serial killer, which is Vinesh will be wearing a black and white suit, black coat and black trousers, white smart shirt and a black tie. A black tie will be worn instead of a brighter colour because serial killers are mainly associated with darker colours rather than brighter colours, darker colours also connote mysterious behaviour.

The serial killers costume will stay the same throughout, he will not be seen wearing anything else. By staying consistent the serial killer's look will look more realistic. We have chosen this get-up because of the setting, because we have chosen to set it in London, this costume works out best.
