Target audience - My production

Target Audience

The target audience I have chosen for my production is 15-35 year old's this is because of the channel it is going to be broadcast on and because it should meet the brief. Using the socio-economic group I have identified that the audience will be C1, C2, D and E. My target audience will be a mixture of the Struggler's, the Resigned, the Aspires and Main-streamers. My production will be pre-watershed which means it will be broadcast on television before 9:00pm, this also means it can not contain any sex, drug or violence use. Crime drama's such as Luther and Dexter is what we are aiming to work towards, we aim to make it more modern and more suitable for people aged 15-35 with less use of violence but still very mysterious and creepy.

Focus group write-up

Our focus group took place in school with our media class during one of our media lessons. We spoke to our class and Mr Halsey and pitched our idea. This included, speaking about our settings, and introduction to our main idea, characters, audience and the channel we would be broadcasting it on. The class with the teacher commented on how we should improve it and what they thought about it.

We decided to base our storyline on a serial killer crime drama, taking programmes such as Dexter and Luther as guidelines. The serial killer is going to be a male (Vinesh), he goes out of his way to commit a series of murders of around 3 people. The clothes we have decided on him to wearing are, smart trousers, shirt, blazer. Our location would be based around Central London. Not too much violence will be revealed as it is pre-watershed, therefore the crimes he commits will be deadly but not consisting of blood or any use of dangerous items such as knifes.

Our show will be broadcast on E4 on a Sunday evening at 8:30-9:00pm, this is because most people are home on a Sunday, they have spare time and it will pull in more viewers. Our target audience is 15-35.

The points we considered, that were said during the focus group were as such:

  1. Sunday is a family day and family's with young children don't want to watch serial killer programmes.
  2. Dexter has a playful feel, will your production add moments of comedy to it.
  3. The serial killer has to be instantly liked, or the audience would not be able to relate themselves with him. He could help someone cross the road, has to have a bubbly personality so the audience like him straight away and can't imagine him doing anything wrong.
  4. How are we going to show the murders?, can't be so violent as the show has to be broadcast pre-watershed.
  5. Will shows that were broadcast in America, work in this country?
  6. Title sequence could follow after the serial killer's name - (VINESH?)
  7. We should consider watching the slender-man for inspiration.
From this discussion, our group considered taking a lot of things on board, things we hadn't thought about, the comments we received were positive and helped us work and change a few elements. Another thing we discussed was that the production will only last 2 minutes so how will we show so much in such little time, within our group we adjusted a few things and made sure that everything will fit into 2 minutes. I also read about the slender man, now I know what some people meant in the focus group and I think it really got me thinking about what we need to do and how we can relate it.

Research and Planning - BBC3

BBC Three is a television channel from the BBC broadcasting via digital cable, terrestrial, IPTV and satellite platforms. The channel’s target includes those in the 16–34 year old age group, and has the purpose of providing "innovative" content to younger audiences, focusing on new talent and new technologies. The channel is on-air from 19:00 to around 05:00 each night, in order to share terrestrial television bandwidth with CBBC

In late 2001, the BBC decided to reposition and rebrand their two digital channels, so that they could be more closely linked to the well-established BBC One and BBC Two. Their plan was for BBC Knowledge to be renamed BBC Four, and indeed this took place in 2002, and for BBC Choice to be renamed BBC Three.

The most popular drama that has aired BBC Three is Gavin & Stacey. It debuted on BBC Three in May 2007. In 2005 of October BBC Three had announced that there would be airing a spin of series from Doctor Who & Torchwood as a post watershed science fiction drama. This was predominantly aimed at a more adult audience. Torchwood launched with a high number of views. It gained 2.4 million viewers in October 2006 when it had launched and became fairly successful.

Research and Planning - Wire in the Blood

Wire in the blood is a British crime drama television series, created and produced by Coastal Productions for the ITV network, that ran from 2002 to 2008. The series is based on characters created by Val McDermid, including a university clinical psychologist, who is able to tap into his own dark side to get inside the heads of serial killers. All of the main episodes revolve around a serial killer whom Hill helps to track down by means of a profile, based on the killer's actions. ITV is a channel we are looking into for broadcasting our show, therefore this drama relates well. The serial killer is a male similar to ours therefore this show relates well. The narrative of this show our similar to ours, crime, violence and dominant males.

Camera-work
Dark lighting, close-ups, long distance shots. The opening title is not quick paced, it takes it's time to introduce the main characters and it shows their character in-depth. It shows some characters in more detail and more close-up than other characters which makes the audience realise who the main characters are.

Editing
The title sequence is in red, the names of the characters are shown in this colour to signify the importance of this colour in this show, red connotes blood, fear and death which is the main narratives to this programme. Due to the opening title pace being slow we see every character in detail and we familiarise ourselves with them, the characters are shown in-depth and in detail to show the audience how important their roles are. We see effects such as blur and fade during the opening title.

Mise-en-scene
We see some characters in black and white professional office wear, we automatically assume these people are good, their professional and they're not bad characters. We also see a lady in more nude clothes such as lingerie, this enables to us that she may be a loose-character lady. In the beginning we see a lot of emphasise on female legs and heels, this shows the audience the importance of female in this show and it also shows them as 'sex objects'. Mulvey's theory of the 'male gaze' is outlined very well throughout the opening credits of the programme.

Research and Planning - Prison Break

Prison break is about a male who goes to prison for a crime he hasn't done. This relates to our production as the show relates to crime and violence. It is action filled and thriller related, he is a male who typically associated with crime and violence. Similarly our serial killer is also a male character. Due to it's storyline the audience for the show is 18-35, this is because it contains adult content including violence. Prison Break was broadcast at 8.00pm which is the time we want to broadcast our programme. Males and Females were both interested in Prison break this is because males can relate themselves to the main character especially when he goes to prison. Females were interested in the show because of finding the main character attractive. In 2005-2006 the show had on average 9.2 million viewers. The show is an American show as crimes and violence as such is popular in the United States. The audience automatically like the main character as they feel sorry for him and can sympathise with him in a huge way. Overall, the genre and the themes portrayed in this TV crime drama are very similar to the sort of production we are going to film.

Camera-work
When the opening titles start we see a close-up of a male, this highlights the tense emotion on his face. The use of close-up is perfect for this shot because the audience get to the him in great detail. Before this we see a long distance shot of the building, the use of the building in the opening credits highlights it's importance, the audience start to wonder what this building is. Other shots used in the opening titles are match-on-action and a huge variety of effects such as dissolve, fade and blur.

Editing
In the opening title, the scenes are quick paced, this gives the audience and idea of the type of show it is, when the tattoo is shown in the opening credits it signifies it's importance to the audience, the audience start to think why it's shown and what could be behind it. The shots used in the title sequence are straight shots which makes the audience think in detail what is going to happen next, it also creates tension and and an upbeat mood.

Sound
The sounds used in the opening sequence are digetic, this sound is parallel to the scenes in the opening sequence and fits perfectly with what is happening. The fast paced music and the fast paced scenes go well together as the mood it creates is the same. The music starts of slower and the gradually picks up it's pace just like the opening titles, it starts off slowly and gets faster and faster to when they are running.

Mise-en-scene
The men all dressed in blue are shown in that way to show their status, this is to enable they are prisoners and they are in the wrong. The make character is dressed in casual clothes, shirt with a hoodie on top and then later we see him in a vest, this shows that he's in the wrong he's been up to something, due to him being dressed in not a sophisticated way. The look on his face is innocent but feisty which confuses the audience to whether he's in the wrong or he's simply innocent. By his movement's and his feisty behaviour the audience automatically assume he's done something, that's why he's in prison

Research and Planning - True Blood Opening Credits

True Blood is about 'Eric Northman' the vampire/serial killer, he has good boy movements, he's a calm man especially when it revealed to the audience that he has a love interest. The audience automatically start to like him because he's a soft hearted gentleman. But underneath the sweet man is a cold hearted serial killer with fangs and back hair. This relates perfectly to our production because the serial killer has a girlfriend he's a normal individual who is liked by the audience. Very similar to 'True blood' our serial killer is a male as well, so is relates very well. True blood is an American based TV Crime drama with mysteries and thriller moments, which is some of the narratives we will be presenting to our audience. The audience for this show is both male and female. Female's because of the love interest, it shows a sensitive side and males because of the manly and crime side.

Camera-work
Long-shots are used when the opening of the show begins, this shows a distance of the trees, the long grass and the weather atmosphere.Throughout the opening, the houses are showed from a distance and so is everything that comes along the journey.

Editing
The camera starts of slow paced when the grass and trees are being showed, and then it gradually goes faster and faster to when the sun sets and rises, the slow motion of the snake shows mystery and thriller narratives. The dark setting shows the thriller side to the programme, which gets the audience involved and intrigued.

Sound
The sound fits perfectly with the opening credits, the mysterious music creates a mysterious atmosphere. The music is digetic sound and stays the same throughout the whole opening credits. The sounds creates tension and gives the audience an awkward feel. The music relates well to the vampires good and bad character.

Mise-en-scene
This American based show is set in a small town Northwest of Louisiana. In the opening credits the small town is showed throughout, during the credits we as the audience get to see the different. We see many dangerous animal's throughout the opening credits, firstly we see a snake, this highlights the programme to the audience as snakes are usually associated with a person with 2 characters, a good and a bad, this is aimed at the vampire who is presented as a soft-hearted gentleman but a cold serial killer. We see characters dressed in white, firstly the black women singing and secondly the child dressed in a white robe, this connotes purity.

Research and Planning - Luther episode.

The second video clip I have chosen is Luther. The story behind the actual crime drama doesn't relate to a serial killer in a huge way but some elements can be related. For example in the first episode you see Luther let's the white man fall, Luther who is a male which is similar to our storyline, our serial killer is a male as well. Similar to the our production Luther is a thriller. When we see Luther letting the White man die, stereotypically we are not surprised as Black males are usually associated with crime and death so it's not a shock to the audience. Letting the man fall but not showing any blood or him injured is a sort of crime we want to portray, this is because we have to broadcast a pre-watershed production, which means no violence should be shown which is exactly what happens in this episode. Luther can be seen as a serial killer because he lets the man fall rather than saving him, many police officers are generous but Luther is seen as aggressive and dominant in this which relates to the behaviour of a male serial killer.

Camera-work
The camera work used in Luther is mainly long shots, this is because of all the running, quick based shots and everything going on all at once. When you see Luther holding the man's hand deciding whether to let him go or let him survive, they use a long-shot, this is to show the positioning of both characters and to show the both males in detail.

Editing
The editing used in the first episode is fast pace editing, there's a jump cut when the car comes. Most of the shots are one shot takes. The match-on-action takes place when both men are in the building. Quick paced shots creates tension as the audience are expected to look in various directions. The straight cuts also contribute to the tension that is caused.

Sound
During the opening of the scene we witness digetic and non digetic music. During the opening scene the music is parallel to what is happening in the show, the police siren's go with the police car and the atmosphere. The music is eerie and mysterious which contributes well to the atmosphere and the setting. Due to it being dark inside, the music fits perfectly with the scene.

Mise-en-scene
The white male is dressed in a more formal way, he is wearing a suit which automatically makes the audience think that he is a white-middle classed male. The black male is dressed in black is wearing casual everyday wear which makes the audience automatically think he may be up to something. The white male character's clothing makes the audience think he's innocent and he's not in the wrong, whereas the black male is wearing a hoodie which makes the audience think he's done something wrong.

Research and Planning - 5 clips relating to our pitch.

Our idea relates to Dexter (Crime Drama) in a very similar way, this show is about a 'noble' serial killer, Dexter who is the main character kills those who do wrong. Our production is very similar as we have also based out 2 minute film on a serial killer. We have based our production on a series of events that all link to murder and mystery. We have decided our opening 2 minutes of the film will be similar to the opening title of Dexter, we will have the Serial killer which is (Vinesh) carry out murder's in very different ways. The types of shots we are interested in using are close-ups to enable what is going on in depth. The genre we have based our film on is thriller which is similar to Dexter. The target audience for our show is 15-35 both male and female as our characters are 2 males, 1 serial killer which is a male, 1 of the 3 targets which is a male, and then 2 female targets. Similar to Dexter we want to introduce our character as being very creepy and unusual. Dexter is similar to our idea however we have planner that the Serial killer doesn't kill the bad but kills the good as well.

Camerawork:
In the opening of Dexter the shots used are quiet broad, they use shots such as close-ups, focus, non-focus. In the opening titles bright lighting is not used to show a thriller side to the show. When shooting outside the camera f23 has been used to enlighten high-contrast situations. In Dexter there is a lot of close-up's to show certain shots to audiences which have been zoomed in x3.

Editing
The first few scenes are done in a quick pace to show the audience what Dexter is all about, the fast pace of the opening scene also enables the type of show it is, its a thriller, there will be police, crime and violence. By the opening scene the audience automatically picture what sort of scenes they will be watching and what to expect. The way he kills the spider on his arm is done quickly, this also enables the quick based production. The way the egg runs is done very cleverly because it automatically becomes blood and something that can be sliced.

Sound
The sounds that are used are non-digetic, the music is not part of the show, the sound used in the opening titles is mood sounds. The music stays the same throughout the opening titles but when sharp objects are shown the music gets more higher pitched to conquer the importance of the knife.

Mise-en-scene
The opening credits are shot in the characters house, this is obvious by when he is in the kitchen frying food. Macro shots are used to closen up the things he does such as shaving or the spider in the beginning. The house is not mainly focused on as much as the things he does is more focused on.

Audience
Dexter is broadcast after water-shed, that is 9:00pm onwards, the target audience for Dexter is 18-35.

Audience Theory

What do you primarily use the media for: entertainment, information or something else?
- I personally use the internet for information and education. I enjoy reading the news on my phone app, and I enjoy reading OK news which is gossip news. I do not use the internet for entertainment as I am not on any social networking sites but I do own a phone which has 'Whatsapp' messenger which counts as socialising. I use the internet when doing my work for basic research or even when looking up media theory's as nowadays everything is available on the internet. Other media such as the TV, I use as a form of entertainment as when I'm bored that's what I enjoy doing. On the other hand, every morning I watch the news on the TV which includes me using media for education.

To what extent do you feel dependant on the media?
- I believe I am very dependant on the media this is because, I take my phone everywhere I go which shows I can't live without it. If I'm not using my phone I'm using my Ipad, or watching the TV which are other forms of media, this shows that I am very dependant on the media. Sometimes not having the internet limits my chances of doing homework which again shows how dependant I am on the media.

Has my dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years
I think my dependence on the media has changed over the last 10 years, this is mainly due to a broader technology now, 10 years ago phones did not have news app's, there wasn't many social networking sites, and there was no tablets/pads. Over the last 10 years the technology has become more wider in a sense that phones now have apps which have networking sites, you can read the news on your phone, you can find out about the latests trends and much much more.

Explorers Feedback - C+

Feedback -
WWW: In my opinion our power point was good, it covered all the aspects of the what we were asked to do such as print, media and general information about the couple.

EBI: In our powerpoint we could of had less text on the slides and had just bullet points which would of made it easier for others in the classroom to read. Secondly we could of had a less funky background and kept it simple which would again have made it easier for other people in the classroom to read.

The Task
We were given a task, called the preliminary exercise, this was given to us so that we become familiar with using the camera's for our actual media c/w. This involved shooting a 180 degree rule which involved two people having a conversation and a match on action, the exercise was supposed to last about 30 seconds. Our clip was basic, 2 people having a conversation which created suspense and made the audience think about 'what is going on', this also created enigma. We also had 1 person lying under the table and then the clip ended, this was kept short and simple as it was just an exercise task. The person lying on the floor had his eyes closed which automatically made the audience think 'what has happened'.

WWW:
I think our clip was shot well considering this was the first time we used the camera's. We all had a part to play in the clip so that everyone had an equal chance of getting involved, Vinesh was good with camera-work therefore he wanted to shoot, me and Vandna were in the conversation during the start of the clip and lastly Ishan was the one lying under the table. Our media exercise was based on creating enigma which was done well, this was done when Ishan was lying under the table with his eyes closed. The 180 degree rule was used correctly as when me and Vandna were talking and it looked like we were opposite each other, thus meant we broke the 180 degree rule. Before we started filming we decided that we would use (ECU) Extreme close-up, we successfully stuck to our plan and used this shot various times, one of them was when Ishan was lying on the floor and the camera zoom's onto him. During the end of the clip we used a transaction, which was a 'fade' this was used to fade out of Ishan's face and end the clip.

EBI:
When me and Vanda were having a conversation, there was too much space between the two of us, this was due to the table being bigger, there was also images/portraits in the background which meant that audience could loose focus and concentrate more on what is in the background rather than the two people having the conversation. For our actual coursework we will take in consideration that having things in the background could loose audience focus. Secondly the lighting in the room was not good, therefore it made Vandna's side of the room look darker and made mine look much brighter. The lighting issues made the clip look un-professional

Film Language Test..0

21st October 2013 - We had our film language Test on the movie, The Usual Suspect. We were shown a certain clip from this movie 3 times before we got time to answer the 4 questions. Each question was out of 12 and the exam as a whole was out of 48. The 4 sections that we had to answer were, Mise-en-scene, camera-work, sound and editing.

The main mistake I made in my exam was not answering the questions in order, this confused the person marking my exam and made it hard for him to understand what question was what. Another thing I could improve on was my time management, this could of helped me organise my work better. For next time I will revise before the exam so I am sure of everything.

Teacher's Feedback -
www: You actually make plenty of good, relevant points but you made a critical error..
ebi: You did not clearly number/mark each question, this made it very difficult to grade and it is vital to avoid this in a real exam.
- Next time, you need detailed notes and then clearly numbered answers. Aim for at least 3 paragraphs for each question.
- Try and use more media language and make sure you answer the question that is given.

The images below are a dominant representation of the upper class people and their way of living.

These images are alternative representations of upper class people compared to the working class.

Stuart Hall

STUART HALL - CULTURAL THEORIST.

Stuart Hall (1980) discovered the theory of encoding/decoding. Hall discovered different types of readings and came up with a theory in order to describe the effects media texts have on an audience. Firstly, he discovered the dominant ideology, typically known as the 'preferred reading' in a media text. This is what readers, viewers and listeners are lead to believe, but do not necessarily have to believe. This is done by the way something is portrayed in the media. Secondly, the 'oppositional reading' are conflict ideas with the preferred reading. This is where ideas of an audience do not meet the creator’s intentions of the media text. Finally, the 'negotiated reading' is a non bias view, where the audience take both preferred and negotiated readings into account.

Hall's ideology has been criticised, for being 'at the expense of the importance of ownership and control' - Stevenson 1995:35

The audience of the iPhone 5c is Chinese young people, as they are the ones the phone has been designed for; this is because Chinese people like coloured things and would spend money on it. In the demo students are shown experimenting and ‘showing off’ the features of the new Apple product. The price of the iPhone 5c is not very high, it is priced at £460 aimed at the working class young people, and this price is low compared to the other Apple product release.

In the advert, the man who describes the features and explains the manufacturing process is an English man, he is the first one shown in the video to emphasise values and traditional beliefs. This will impress the iPhone 5c buyers. The background of the advert is purely white and is in that colour to enhance the phone and make it stand out even more. The camera angles used in the demo are mostly close-up shots; this is so that the main focus of the customers watching is on the beauty of the new product.

The story-line of the advert is to portray the iPhone 5c in a very positive way by showing the manufacturing process and impressing customers showing the way the iPhone
is something unique. Apple products are always shown in a close-up shot and with a white background.  The white background shows a modern feel, and the type of text is promotional text.
